Tube – Mobile App

I’ve worked on multiple projects that use API’s but never fully understood how they work. So a friend and I decided to learn by designing and coding our own app all powered by API’s.

We decided on a free and simple iOS app that shows the status of the London Underground system as TFL provide API’s for free on this data and there was a gap in the market for something lightweight, fast and simple with no advertisements.

Team

Design, front-end, back-end and research all by Matthew Higgins (me) and Alan Lau.

Impact

  • Over 100,000 downloads with nearly 60,000 users and a 4.9 rating on the App Store.

  • Feedback from a team of tube drivers that they all use it daily and love it.

  • Solid understanding on how to build an app.

  • Marginally profitable :)

Learn by doing

As a product designer, I am always looking for new ways to innovate and create products that improve people's lives. That's why myself and a friend also decided to build our own app.

Users

We’ve nearly surpassed 60,000 active users, a 4.9 star rating and we’ve have had direct feedback from a London tube driver that they and their colleagues all use it co-ordinate swapovers.

But most importantly, building my own app allowed me to showcase my passion for product design and my commitment to delivering high-quality products that make a difference in people's lives.

I believe that every product has the potential to solve a problem or improve someone's life, and I am dedicated to creating products that do just that.
